The American Chemical Society (ACS), the SENCER Centers of Innovation Southwest and South, and Bellhaven University welcome you to Jackson, Mississippi and to our symposium with a theme of STEM Education in Mississippi: Issues and Innovations. Throughout a full-day of activities, we will focus on use of innovative and proven pedagogy to reduce barriers to learning, student success, and retention. Presenters include educators and administrators from throughout the country.

Beth Hussa is an Assistant Professor of Biology at Millsaps College, and is the current coordinator for the first year problem solving “Ventures” course. She received her B. A. degree from Illinois WesleyanUniversity, and her Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from Loyola University Chicago. After completing her postdoctoral work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she served in visiting teaching positions at both North Central College and Illinois Wesleyan University before arriving at Millsaps in 2014. She has had success in implementing a variety of innovative teaching strategies in the classroom, including her newest venture into gamification. Dr. Hussa’s research interests involve bacterial symbioses, and she has been successful in publishing and presenting her work with undergraduate students at national meetings and in journals such as Applied and Environmental Microbiology and the Journal of Bacteriology.
